چکیده

Introduction. The Collaborative Research Centre 747 “Micro cold forming” studies aspects of the production of micro components. Motivated by the engineering application of melting the end of thin wires by laser heating in order to accumulate material for a subsequent forming process, we study the melting and solidification of material with a free capillary melt surface. The model leads to a coupled system of Stefan and Navier-Stokes equations, where the solution of the Stefan problem defines the solid subdomain Ωs(t) and the solution of Navier-Stokes with capillary boundary gives the shape of the liquid subdomain Ωl(t). An Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian Finite Element method is presented that is able to compute a numerical solution without spurious oscillations.

Finite element simulation of pyroplastic deformation, anisotropic shrinkage and heterogeneous densification for ceramic materials during liquid phase sintering process

Pyroplastic deformation is a distortion of the ceramic shape during the sintering process. It occurs because the flow of the vitreous phase at high temperature and the applied stress due to the weight of the product during sintering process. The aim of this paper deals with describing a numerical-experimental method to evaluate the pyroplastic deformation, to predict the anisotropic shrinkage a...

Numerical Simulation of the Hydrodynamics of a Two-Dimensional Gas—Solid Fluidized Bed by New Finite Volume Based Finite Element Method

n this work, computational fluid dynamics of the flow behavior in a cold flow of fluidized bed is studied. An improved finite volume based finite element method has been introduced to solve the two-phase gas/solid flow hydrodynamic equations. This method uses a collocated grid, where all variables are located at the nodal points. The fluid dynamic model for gas/solid two-phase flow is based on ...

The solid-liquid interfacial free energy out of equilibrium

The properties of the interface between solid and melt are key to solidification and melting, as the interfacial free energy introduces a kinetic barrier to phase transitions. This makes solidification happen below the melting temperature, in out-of-equilibrium conditions at which the interfacial free energy is ill-defined. Here we draw a connection between the atomistic description of a diffus...

Propagating phase interface with intermediate interfacial phase: Phase field approach

An advanced three-phase phase field approach (PFA) is suggested for a nonequilibrium phase interface that contains an intermediate phase, in particular, a solid-solid interface with a nanometer-sized intermediate melt (IM). A thermodynamic potential in the polar order parameters is developed that satisfies all thermodynamic equilibrium and stability conditions. The special form of the gradient ...
